Beauty Trends – New York Fashion Week – Spring 2014

PrintTo complete the look of a designer’s collection the right hair and makeup is so important and can add to the look or in some cases I’ve seen is a distraction.   I find it fascinating backstage at New York Fashion Week how all the chaos with all the models, backstage crew, press can all come together at the final moment before the model is sent down the runway and appear so perfectly styled.
While I was covering New York Fashion Week, there was certainly a popular trend in make up, or lack there of.  Most of the looks were super natural with beautiful skin being the focus.  Eye make up trends ranged from copper colored lids seen at Naeem Kahn, to a retro soft green at Lela Rose to a 70’s inspired blue at Carolina Herrera.  Cheek color was almost totally absent which put focus on the eye or lips  – a trend seen across many of the shows.
Lip color was bright and bold and oh so orange at Joanna Mastrioanni and a pink raspberry lip stain was soft and beautiful at Naeem Kahn.  James Boehrem, the lead makeup artist for Naeem’s collection said, “We wanted the girls to look a little more casual, so we went with a soft copper on the eye  , mascara and brushed the eyebrows up.  Then we used these beautiful lip pencils from NARS in the color Hyde Park and the other is a shocking pink called You.   We blended the two together with a finger so it’s more a stained effect on the lips.”  A darker berry lip was beautiful at Nicole Miller.
For your hair trend report, get ready for a serious braid trend.  Seen in the Paris runway shows last year it has finally caught up here.  Fishtail braids crowned the heads at Rebecca Minkoff, retro 40’s braids at Naeem Kahn and tropical “Bo Derek” braids were on the runway at Alon Livne.  At Carolina Herrera a modified french twist with the two twists meeting together in the middle. The messy braids at Rachel Zoe cascaded down the models backs almost where you couldn’t make out the hair was actually braided.  If you slept in a braid the night before and tossed and turned all night, you’ll look perfect in the morning.  I call it the sleep and go look.

The scoop on nails is that “Nail Art” is not only a staple at fashion week but  it’s as talked about as the hair and makeup.  The detailed nail look at Rebecca Minkoff was complete with skulls flowers on top of a tangerine nail.  At Badgley Mischka a beautiful soft aquamarine blue was shown which is my #1 pick color for Spring 2014, called Placid Blue.
Have fun with the new Spring colors, experiment with braids and the soft messy looks which have been popular the last few seasons.
