Austin Intercultural Fashion Show Celebrates Fashion From Around the World

When you hear the word fashion you will interpret it in many ways.  You may think about the latest runway trends, a popular designer or you may think about fashion in a practical way for clothing that’s functional for work or play.    And depending on where you are in the world,  fashion will certainly play a different role.

Shalini Komarla, executive director of Austin Intercultural Network, and the founder of the Intercultural Fashion Show noticed at their meetings that there was a genuine interest in the history of the attendee’s clothing.  “People were interested in knowing more about their clothes, the colors, the patterns, the significance, etc. And that’s how the Intercultural Fashion Show came about”,  said Komarla.  The 2018 show was the 5th season for the group.

The fashion show provides a runway to showcase collections near and far.  “The show brings a lot of visibility to the designers and to their country as well,” added Komarla.
This year the five featured designers were:
E by Evelyn – Women’s Chic Wear and handbags
Elrick – Men’s Casual Wear
Nan Blassingame – Native American “Powwow wear”
Shavante – African and Multicultural Wear (Casual & Formal)
Suram Fashions – Ethnic Indian Wear
The Austin Intercultural Network is supported by the City Of Austin, Cultural Arts Division.  Stay tuned for a possible new event by Komarla.  She would like to launch the first ever Intercultural Fusion Festival.
