After attending the Threads for Hope Charity Fashion Event at The Phoenix on April 24th I am now convinced of one thing: from now on I will exclusively donate to charities that build their events around the bikini. The proceeds from the night benefited Threads of Hope, a nonprofit whose goal is to stop the abuse and trafficking of children in the Philippines. Very noble. And it showcased local designer Stacy Kenyon‘s line of couture swimwear. Noble to the max.
The event kicked off with a demonstration by a pair of salsa dancers. Definitely a non sequitur, but it had the expected effect of warming up the crowd. Having just moved back to the area, I had never been to The Phoenix, but it seemed the perfect venue for such an event. A long, well-lit, catwalk was flanked by several couches making it intimate yet very hip.
I was told that the models were not professionals, but rather friends of the designer and the organizers. This blew my mind. I sat through the entire show wondering whether I would walk 40 feet down a raised catwalk, in front of 100 strangers, wearing clothing that combined wouldn’t make a pair of my boxer briefs, all for my friend. I quickly decided that I wouldn’t. But that’s because my friends are jerks.
I applauded the models’ moxie. Then I applauded the models’ bikinis.
As the show progressed, each model added a bit of character and attitude to her walk, which really got the crowd going. Billed as a couture line, I was surprised that most of the swimwear would not appear out of place on any lake in town. In true Austin fashion, Ms. Kenyon paired virtually all of the swimwear outfits with cowboy boots, making for a decidedly sexy combination. Note to the ladies: this look is heavily endorsed by all men.
The event was a blast. Not just because I approve of any endeavor which gives women the chance to model, or because I got to sport my new gingham tie, but because the whole event was carried out with class. The crowd was respectful and incredibly supportive. We were gathered for a fantastic cause. Oh, and of course, the bikinis.
