Fabricker, Austin’s soon-to-be destination for luxury fabrics, hosted a trunk show Wednesday, September 28th, at Spiderhouse’s 29th Street Ballroom.  The event gave local designers and fabric enthusiasts a chance to preview Fabricker’s wide selection before their official opening in 2012.

The show featured fabrics from designers such as Versace, Liberty of London, Anna Sui, Carolina Herrera, Ralph Lauren, in addition to rare and vintage fabrics that could otherwise not be found in Austin.

Local designer, savannahred, showed her newest vintage-inspired collection for real-sized women. Savannahred gave Austin’s fashion scene an exclusive preview of her collection, showing the designs here before they are launched in Seattle.

April Kling Meyer, founder of Fabricker, found that there was a niche being ignored in her experience working for a big box fabric retailer since 2001. Her mission is to “provide high-quality fashion apparel fabric to the general public, garment designers, fashion students, textile collectors and enthusiasts”.

“We are kind of like galleries in a way– we curate a collection, of fabrics as it were, that appeal to different types of designers and home sewers and their unique tastes”, Kling Meyer said.

Fabricker is currently undergoing negotiations to secure a lease for their retail location. In the meantime, they will be hosting various trunk shows in the area. They will also be putting their fabrics online in October or November to create buzz before the opening.

Party-goers and experts from Austin’s top salons packed The Palm Door Wednesday night, eager to marvel at the newest hair inventions from Jackson Ruiz Salon, Jose Luis Salon, Propaganda Hair Group and Ron King Salon

Before the show, guests sipped on drinks from Deep Eddy Vodka and nibbled on bites from Pink Avocado while they got a chance to meet the genius behind the hairstyles that were about to be featured. Each of the salons set up a booth at the show where they showed off their expertise and gave out product samples.

The event was hosted by NaturallyCurly.com, a collection of sites that celebrates curly hair. The show began with a brief message from Gretchen Heber, announcing the launch of the name Texture Media which will represent all of the brands in the company.

Jose Luis Salon started off the show with models dressed in all black, wearing combinations of leather and lace. The hair was sculpted into intricately braided updos. The result was a bit gothic with a contemporary edge.

The models from Jackson Ruiz Salon were nothing but fierce as they strutted across the stage. Each one of the models wore an entirely different look from soft waves to a slicked-back low bun.

Ron King was definitely inspired by the 1950s this season. Models of all ages were outfitted by Maya Star boutique in party dresses reminiscent of the era. Many different hair types were showcased from mid-length curly hair to short hair in a bob.

Propaganda Hair Group closed the show with two groups of models. The first group featured futuristic fantasy hair and the second featured wearable contemporary designs to show off the salon’s versatility.

It’s been an extra hot summer, unfortunately, and the temperature is showing no signs of letting up just yet! Learn how you can combat the heat at this year’s Austin City Limits Festival so you can look your best from day to night!

Top 10 products to keep you looking fresh and fabulous at the Austin City Limits Festival

1. Elta MD UV Clear Sunscreen – Elta MD UV Clear Sunscreen has become my favorite sunscreen because it is great at clearing your skin of acne and blotchiness. As a plus, the SPF is over 45! This sunscreen goes on light and does not have a overpowering
sunscreen smell.

2. REDKEN Hair Protection—Everyone remembers their skin when it comes to sunscreen, but women don’t often think about protecting their hair from the UV rays as well which can be a necessity. A sunscreen for your hair will help prevent color fading from the sun and keep your hair and scalp healthy.

3. Sugar Rose Lip Balm—This Sugar Rose lip balm does it all—hydrates, protects lips from the sun, and adds a touch of color that looks good on just about everyone. It’s a great way to keep your lips looking and feeling great this ACL.

4. Benetint Cheek Tint—When you are going to be outside all day sweating and re-applying your sunscreen, having to apply a blush on top can be too much of a hassle. This Benetint cheek tint is perfect because you only have to put it on the beginning of the day and there will be no need to reapply! It can also double as a lip tint, which is a plus.

5. Make Up Forever Waterproof Makeup—Waterproof eye makeup is perfect for the ACL weekend because it will stay put all day long and you won’t have to worry about smudging and reapplying. My favorites are the Make Up Forever Aqua Smokey Lash because it gives you super full dramatic lashes and the Make Up Forever waterproof liquid eyeliner, which stays put from the first show to the last.

6. Clean and Clear Blotting Sheets—These are great for taking the oil and sweat off of your face while keeping your makeup in place. They will keep your face looking matte through the day and night.

7. Psssst Dry Shampoo—This dry shampoo is great in so many ways! First, it absorbs oil to keep your hair looking and feeling clean, with or without washing first. It is easy to use on the run, and it smells great! As a bonus, this dry shampoo is super cheap! Spray throughout hair and then brush through hair for an instant blowout look.

8. Secret Clinical Strength Deodorant— This deodorant works exceptionally well keeping you feeling and smelling fresh all day long. It’s a lifesaver, and I recommend it to everyone whether you over sweat or not! It’s especially great when you know you’re going to be out in the heat, and you don’t want to worry about how you smell.

9. Evian Water Toner— This is a great and refreshing way to easily rinse your face of dirt and sweat to keep your skin looking clean, fresh, and hydrated.

10. SEPHORA Hand Sanitizer—Always a great product to have on hand, this hand sanitizer moisturizes as it kills bacteria, leaving your skin feeling clean and smooth.

There’s an exciting new way to liven up your wardrobe, indulge in your hat-wearing fantasies, and support a great local cause! Local milliner Laura Del Villaggio of Milli Starr has created Fascinator Fridays to help you indulge your passion for hats and express your individuality while supporting local charity, Swan Songs. The first Fascinator Friday will be held this week on July 22nd.

A fascinator is a small cocktail hat or feathered headpiece that has become popular greatly because of Catherine Middleton, the new Duchess of Cambridge and member of the Royal Family. Humorously dubbed the “gateway drug to hats,” fascinators are a small, creative way to complete an outfit and reflect your personality. Laura has been making fascinators for almost a decade and is constantly adding new designs at Studio Downtown and The Hatbox. She believes fascinators “should be exquisite, wearable art.”

Milli Starr presents two major seasonal collections each year, in the Spring and Fall. For Fascinator Fridays, Laura will debut new collections of five or six one-of-a-kind headpieces. July’s collection is entitled Les Boutons (buttons). Each new collection will feature a common theme or color scheme. With this event, Laura hopes to encourage “an appreciation for true artisinal millinery as opposed to mass-manufactured fashion.”

At Fascinator Fridays, attendees will receive complimentary makeup touch-ups from Kandy Glass of Face Kandy, while Laura gives tips on how and when to wear a fascinator. Cocktails and treats from The Pie Society will also be available. You can purchase a $5 raffle ticket for a chance to win an item from a local designer or boutique. All proceeds from the raffle and a portion of the evening’s sales will benefit Swan Songs, which provides private concerts for terminally ill patients.

Fascinator Fridays will be held the fourth Friday of every month from 6-9PM at Studio Downtown located at 608 E. 3rd St, Austin, TX 78701. The first event is this Friday, July 22nd. Click here for details about Fascinator Friday’s event this week.

Auctioned items benefited the National Hispanic Institute (nhi-net.org).

They are done in a tasteful, elegant way with just enough revealing detail. David’s inspiration comes from a desire to make clients happy, and he offers a personalized, custom-tailored experience.

Other featured designs of the evening were Dija Swimwearby designer Laura Lewis; Shalena Designs by jewelry designer Shalena White; Simmang Design by jewelry designer Jillian Simmang; and Monica Michelle Li dresses and gowns by designer Monica Li.

The event was sponsored by Jardin Corona Restaurant, Coors Brewing, Innate Beauty, Arcielago, Congruent Style, Austin Ashiatsu, Cake Ball Addiction, Wild Blue Photography, ButterFly Entertainment, I Heart Yoga and MVP Sports Bar & Grill. Hair provided by Ivy Kim and makeup by J. Anthony Martinez of San Antonio.
